I fish because I like fishing. Because I enjoy the invariably beautiful places where trout are found and I dislike the invariably ugly places where crowds gather. I fish because this way I run away from the television commercials, cocktails, and false social attitude. Because in a world where most people seem to go by in life doing things they despise, my fishing is both a never-ending source of pleasure and a small rebellion, because trout don’t lie, they don’t cheat, they wonīt be bought or bribed or will they be dazzled by power, but they only respond to quietness, humbleness and never ending patience. Because I suspect that men walk this path for the one and only time and I don't want to throw my trip away. Because mercifully there are no telephones in trout-filled rivers. Because only in the forest can I find solitude without feeling lonely. Because whisky tastes better out of an old tin mug. Because someday I may catch a mermaid and finally, not because I think fishing is so terribly important but because I suspect that so many of Manīs concerns are equally insignificant and not in the least such fun .
